The First Commandment – Exodus 20:2-3 “I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
The first commandment consists of three parts, and we will explain each one, as this commandment is considered the covenant that guarantees the rest of the commandments and covenants. If we implement the other nine commandments (“Do not commit adultery,” “Do not kill,” “Do not steal,” etc.) without upholding the first commandment, which is “to worship the true LORD God” then the rest of the commandments will have no effect, and will lose their essence.
And this explains why some may say: “So-and-so died a very painful death, why? He neither stole nor committed adultery, so what was the reason?”
The answer here is: Was he worshiping the true LORD God? Certainly, and without a doubt, no.
Why not ask the god he was worshiping why he destroyed him in such a way before the people?
Usually, in contract papers, it is stated at the beginning of the contract that “The preamble of this contract is an integral part of it” and often includes “Presented by so-and-so.” In the same way, the LORD God condescended to our nature and understanding, as if He were initiating a partnership contract with us, saying: “I am the one signing. I am the one engraving the commandments with My own finger. I am the one who sets the terms and the covenant with you. I am the LORD your God.” And thus, the commandments began.
The LORD God did not use the phrase “I am the LORD thy God” in the Holy Bible to frighten you. He did not use it to say: “I am your destroyer,” or “I am the One who curses you,” and so on. Rather, it came as an expression of absolute fatherhood, as if He is saying: “I am your Heavenly Father,” “I am the One who gave you life,” “I am the one who blesses you.”
Also in the Book of Isaiah 41:13 “For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.”
In Leviticus 11:44 “For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy” We also see the blessing upon the land in Leviticus 19:25 “And in the fifth year shall ye eat of the fruit thereof, that it may yield unto you the increase thereof: I am the LORD your God.”
We now come to the second part of the verse, where He says in Exodus 20:2 “which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.”
All people on earth, regardless of their religions, even the pagans, believe they are worshiping the Creator of the heavens and the earth. But in truth, they are misled, following other gods besides Him. This is the greatest trap the devil has set on earth: to make you believe, worship, and follow a law that belongs to a god who is not the true God. Is the cow, worshiped by millions in India, the Creator?
Is Allah, who sent Muhammad with his desert law, the Creator?
Are the idols worshiped by pagans the Creator?
God gave us a description of Himself so that we, and the children of Israel whom He freed from Egypt during Pharaoh’s time, can recognize Him. The LORD God is the Liberator and the Savior, He is the One who sets you free from your bondage; He is the Deliverer. Just as He brought the Israelites out of Egypt and out from under Pharaoh’s grip, He brought them out so that they would have freedom, and not to enslave them.
So, each one of us is just like the Israelites; we all have a moment of crossing over with the LORD, a moment of breaking free from chains with the LORD, a moment of coming out of slavery with the LORD. We’ve all crossed over from old beliefs inherited from our families, from false religions passed down to us from them, from idols we were given and bowed to without understanding, and from religions that imposed certain rituals and duties on us. Therefore, we are all converts. Is there any god who promised his servants freedom the way our God did? Absolutely not. All other gods have enslaved their followers and bound them with the yoke of rituals and obligations.
Look at the chains your deity has placed on you. Are you living in freedom, or are you bound? Are you living as a child or as a slave?
2 Corinthians 3:17 tells us, “and where the Spirit of the LORD is, there is liberty.”
To discern which God we are truly worshiping, we must look at how the prophets and apostles in the past recognized the voice of the LORD God, and how they knew that this was the true God and followed Him. The answer: From the commandments, the requests, and the ways in which He dealt with them. We notice in the story of Moses and Pharaoh how many times Moses said: “Let my people go, that they may serve me” This phrase was spoken by Moses on behalf of the LORD: “Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me.” or “Thus says the LORD God: Let my son go, that he may serve me”. We see that the LORD God does not accept that you remain under Pharaoh’s rule and worship the LORD at the same time. We cannot serve two masters; we must choose one. The LORD does not accept a shared servitude between two.
Joseph also, from prison to the peak of freedom. Not only did he attain freedom, but he also became the second most powerful man after Pharaoh over all of Egypt and the surrounding lands. Saul, too, was a slave to his Pharisaism and a slave to carrying out the Law to the letter. But the LORD came and made him “Paul,” granting him liberation from the bondage of the law and the yoke of the letter’s chains upon him. The LORD mentioned dozens of times in the Holy Bible, “and I will turn away your captivity.”
Jeremiah 29:14 “and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations,”
Jeremiah 33:26 “for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.”
Amos 9:14 “And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel”
We notice that the true LORD God is the one who frees you and gives to you; He is the Liberator. This is the attribute He gave us: “I am your Savior and your Liberator from the house of bondage.” Saint Paul says in the Epistle to the Galatians 4 “3- Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:
4- But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
5- To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.”
The greatest liberation and ultimate freedom in which the LORD God showed that He is the Liberator, the Savior, and the guarantor of freedom is through the incarnation of the LORD Jesus Christ, as mentioned in
1 Corinthians 7:22 “For he that is called in the LORD, being a servant, is the LORD’s freeman”
Therefore, the LORD God is the God of liberation; He is the Father God. This is how He has revealed Himself to us.
Think! If the LORD hates slavery, and has mentioned in several places in the Holy Bible: “I am your Liberator and the One who will turn away your captivity,” then why would He take us captive? Why would He place burdens upon us and enslave us? As for your submission to rituals, obligations, and restrictions to please your god, then you are not worshiping the true LORD God, unfortunately, you are worshiping the anti-God.
The LORD Jesus says in John 15:15 “Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”
So why live as a slave on earth when you have the option of sonship? Why accept the chains of Satan upon you and your life, when the choice of freedom is right in front of you? Christ has already broken your chains; do not allow any religion, denomination, or person to bind you again.
We now come to the third part of the commandment: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
There are those who mock and say: “How many gods are there on earth, and how many creators exist?”
The answer: The Creator God, the Father who is sovereign over all things, is one, but that doesn’t necessarily mean He is the same god you worship! Since the time of Adam to this day, humans have preferred rituals, rites, circumambulation, and prostration before strange gods, leaving behind the true LORD God. When Moses was delayed a little in returning to the people of Israel from the mountain with the commandments inscribed on the tablets of the law, he came back to find that they had made a golden calf from their jewelry and gold, and were worshiping it.
And if we examine human worship today, we will find those who worship themselves, those who worship money, and a group about whom the Holy Bible says in Philippians 3:19, “whose God is their belly.” Furthermore, there are slaves to images, statues, stones, graves, saints, and spiritual leaders, as well as slaves to their addictions and desires. This extends even to those whose worship is directed toward other gods, such as Buddha, the Hindu deities, Allah who sent Muhammad, Satan, science, and so on.
The true Creator God is the One who sets you free from your sins, from the false beliefs inherited from your family, from the rituals and obligations imposed on you by your religion, through which you lived your whole life as nothing more than a slave. He freed you from outdated demands that exhausted you in vain, from the curses you inherited in your past, and from the sins of your former life.
If today you are not a true Christian, ask God the Father, Creator of heaven and earth, and say to Him: “Set me free, O LORD. Another god has enslaved me without my knowing, so set me free and bring me back to You so that I may know You more.”
Galatians 5:1 “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
In the end, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
